Went to over take a car, then my auto TD5 surges!!

Was driving last night - planted accelarator pedal and then the car surged up and down the rev range and would not build speed like it normally does.

Subsequent full accleration tests shows that the car seems to lack full power - noticeable on hills for example.

In the low rev range the car goes ok but on kickdown seems to lack power

Has anyone had this problem? The car has 80000 kms just serviced.

Hi, sorry, don't know your name...?

I had a very similar thing a few years ago, got so bad that I could not accelerate uphill let alone overtake.  I took it back to the local dealer numerous times, and although they improved it somewhat, they never got rid of it.  I ended up changing the air filter, fuel filter, checking out all of the earth connections in the engine bay etc.

I never worked out what the cause was, but it went away by itself.

I'd suggest that you disconnect your battery for about an hour, to clear the "learnt" information in the engine computer.  Reconnect it, and then take it for a good hard thrash.  Drive like a maniac, (legally of course!) for a couple of days so that the computer "relearns" your hard driving style.  I can't guarantee this will fix it, but give it a go...

Thanks Will

yeah it's weird.

LR are saying turbo hoses, fuel filter or flaring gearbox.

You rev the guts oiut of it and it goes but at a retarded pace.

Motor seems fine.

If I plant my foot then as the car build s speed, it hesitates up and down until it reaches a suitable speed.

I cant replicate the hesitation after about 10 minutes - the vehicle just accelerates but at a pace like it has a 20 tonne load behiond it.

Thansk for you help.

I have a dual battery system so wouldnt know where to start

G,Day Will,  Coming home from North Coast NSW towing my caravan I had the surge prob.  Have had ECU remapped last year and impressed with the power decided to overtake with caravan in overtaking lane.  Pumped out heaps of smoke and lost power on and off, however has not occured again....has to be fuel related I reckon??
