Bluff/Stirling high country family trip - 24-26 Feb ....
(1/1)

(copied from the yahoo site for completeness...)
Some of us returned to Melbourne last night after family illness
issues and weather led to discretion being the better part of valour
as they say...
A great day touring to Bluff Hut, Bindaree Hut and Craigs Hut on
Saturday. In rain and mist... typical February weather - well, I
guess in the high country, everything is typical at any time of year.
Dean Stewart and his wife Marilyn, Michael Samootin, Catherine and
kids, Franz, and the abridged Arch clan all met in Mansfield on
Friday night. Got away at 10am on Sat with full tanks and take-away
coffees - heading through the Howqua Valley to Bluff Hut. Nothing
challenging in the drive, though the drive down 16 Mile Jeep Track
gave a bit of challenge to Catherine who doesn't do much of the
driving.
We wwer going to do Corn Hill Logging Track up the Striling Circuit
Rd, but the first steep stretch, with a slick of rained on mud over
a spoon drain led us to change the plans to Bindaree Track.
Bindaree Hut for an extended bbq lunch, then up to the Circuit Rd,
and Monument Track, to Clear Hills Track and Craigs Hut.
Really nice driving up the top of Stirling - in the mists and the
snow gums. We also had a great view of the back of Michael's car,
and our snatch strap stretching back to ours :-| as I went to go
back into low range on Monument Track - I found I couldn't!!! No
end of forward/back/braking/switch on/off etc would make it engage!
(and I had been bragging about how good the Defender transfer case
was!!!). So - in a manual with only high-range, it was a bit of a
struggle - and the first rocky steep section saw the strap
attached... and Michael's new STTs going very well!
Anyway - a very foggy visit to Craigs Hut - then Michael headed
home, and we followed FRanz and the Stewarts donw to King Hut -
ready to camp the night - till Daniel's cold and the incredible rain
storm that blew through as we got out of the car led us to get back
into the car... Chinese at Mansfield, then the drive home to our
own bed at midnight... thinking of Franz and Dean/Marilyn packing
up a wet site this morning, but a great day yesterday.
cheers all,
Simon
