Exhaust Leak

(1/1)

CAL415:
Gday,
I own a late 01' V8 Disco II (purchased late 02' from LR) - it just ran out of new car warranty last month, Since we have had it we have had some problems with the exhaust manifold bolts coming loose.

Its been fixed 3 times in the 6 months we have had it and according to the land rover guys in at Alto Newcastle theres not much we can really do about it as its a common fault ??

They told me that the V8's are prone to this as they have no flexible joins in there exaust unlike the TD5's, and any V8 owner who does alot of off roading will have this problem. We live at stockton and go on the beach all the time so i am not to happy about this.

Has anyone else had or heard of this problem? Is there any easy fix to this problem?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mick.

Hey Mick,

I've never come across this problem before & my '03 is my 3rd V8 Disco. Sounds suss to me !!
I would maybe go see a reputable exhaust shop maybe one that specialises in custom hi-performance systems & they should be able to workout a flexable joint or complete system (more growl  8O   ) that will rid you of this problem.
The other thing is they may give you some sort of warranty which stops any further expense, as a new system will cost you but it may save you money & heartache in the long run ??

Hope this helps mate,

You should talk to Lawrance. He has had the very same problem and no solution as yet I believe.

Yes, both Lawrance & I have had this problem. Lawrance has a 99 Disco and I have an 04 Disco so it looks like they have never bothered fixing the fault. It tends to be the actual studs which come loose rather than the nuts and once they come loose the first time it is almost impossible to get them tight again.

On each side 2 of the 3 stud holes go all the way through so Range-Rov have put bolts through & then added nuts so hopefully this will fix the problem.

The only times that my exhaust bolts have come loose was when I was driving through the many many kilometres of corrugations in the Outback.  I was a bit disappointed to see that Land Rover have no proper cure for the problem.  Last year when Adam and myself crossed the Simpson Desert we both suffered exhaust bolts coming loose, resulting in the V8s sounding like power boats!

Mine is a '99 with 170,000 kms and Adam's is an '04 with barely 50,000 kms (if I'm not wrong)

The other time that the bolts came loose on mine was the very first Simpson Desert crossing back in 2002.  So now I just carry a deep neck socket and a long long socket extension with me.  I probably won't need it until the next Outback excursion though!
