Front prop shaft rebuild.

Hi all, I had my D/C fail quite badly.  Thank goodness it was caught before it flew apart!

I had it rebuilt with 3 greasable uni joints, took a week or so, but the main time was taken in getting it apart.

On refitting the vehicle is SOOO smooth, that I reckon the D/C was failing for quite some time.

Hi Will,

How many kms did you have on the odometer before the front tailshaft DC started to fail?

Also, do you have a lift on your vehicle or are you running standard ride height?

If you have an unmodified suspension, your odometer may be a good guide for lots of folks who are wondering when they should take a look at their own front tailshafts.

Thanks,

Lawrance

Winaje:
I feel that my DC has been failing for about 10000 kms, so it probably started at around 190000.

I have had 2" of lift for about 100000, so am not at standard height.

Just in case someone is after a TD5 front propshaft, I have a couple of fully rebuilt and rebalanced ones that I'm wanting to sell off to clear up some space in my over crowded garage.

Please contact me at my email address lawrance @ hotmail . com (without the spaces)

I will most likely be able to beat the prices from any independent Land Rover specialist in Australia.

These front prop shafts that I have are NOT suitable for the V8 because they have the full concertina rubber boot where the shaft is able to extend and retract.  On the V8s, the exhaust catalytic converter is too near this rubber boot and may damage it.

I'm in the process of rebuilding my front and rear shafts myself at the moment. I have the heavy duty GKN UJ's with zerks to go in to the joints, but the hardest thing I'm trying to find is the centre bearing. I have got the old one apart but no one in AU seems to stock this part or know where to get it. I am trying to source on from the states, but would prefer to by locally.

Anyone got any ideas ?

Cheers

George.
