Brake Pad Wear

Has anyone had their rear pads wear considerably faster than their front pads? 30K ago i replaced front and rear pads, discs and re-kitted cylinders. to date I have 10mm left on the front and only 4mm on the rear. I always thought the front should wear a lot faster than the rears. master cylinder has been replaced (thought proportioning valve) and both rears worn to same 4mm on both sides (so probably not sticking wheel cylinder). Truckasaurus is a Td5 auto running 32" tyres fyi.

Hi there, I have had some pretty good wear out of my pads, in a similar config to yours.  Do you carry heavy weights in the rear?  Sure that the rear calipers are releasing correctly?  Sure that the pads are the same grade front to rear?  How many kms have you done?

I find that my brake pads wear quite quickly around 30,000 Ks I do tow a boat every weekend. but they all wear the same
Sorry to change you thread how do the 32 inch tyres go on the TD5 auto, have you done any changes for them? As thinking about the same for mine.

Well we changed the rear pads about 2 services ago but the fronts are still the originals and the Discos done 180000 klms replaced the rears with genuine pads I think I will replace the fronts with the same.

not sure if the rear calipers are releasing properly. i had the axle stands under and rotating the tyres seemed to produce about the right amount of rub/friction/resistence. Not sure how to work out if calipers are releasing properly? calipers were re-kitted and discs replaced when pads changed 30k ago. discs just started showing some scoring wear on rear if that helps. master cylinder is new and lines have been well bled and ABS has had new shuttle valve etc to fix 3 amigos.

the car has done around 30,000km on these pads - mainly city driving. I have had a few trips loaded/camper trailer, but 80%+ is unloaded.

previous set got around 50,000km rears worn to metal fronts 5mm+ left. 90% of that was fully loaded/somewhat overloaded over lots of rough roads through Africa. This (rear) set wont make 40,000km and have had less work. even if a softer compond the rears are wearing fast and the fronts will probably do 70,000 km.

pads are supposed to be same compound.

32" tyres - fitted easily (I have a 50mm lift though) and have seen a similar disco with 33" BFG MT on a 2 mm lift and no other mods (cutting) needed. they might have a fuel/power cost though. i only average around 7.2km/L - best 8.4 and worst 6.1 towing camper with hard driving. the speedo has been recalibrated as was out by around 10%. stock before tyres, bar, winch, lift etc was 10km/L.
