ABS problem
« on: October 02, 2008, 12:09:18 PM »
i have a problem with my 2003 D2. The Abs system has been a frustrating nightmare. I have had the park Brake-ABS-Traction-HDC lights which is apparently rear wheel sensor. i had the system reset several times (worked for a while), rear sensor cleaned (after i could not reset by disconnecting the battery) and then finally replaced. the other day under heavy braking the ABS-Traction-HDC trio came on (and stayed on) and then went off when i restarted the vehicle 10 minutes later. Is this an indication that a front sensor is going or could it be a temperamental earth problem perhaps. Does anyone have any ideas or has experienced similar problems? I heard a similar story through the grape vine and the problem was supposedly fixed by replacing the battery which does not seem logical to me.

I doubt replacing the battery will help...  Are you using non-genuine brake pads?  I have heard that the aftermarket pads can sometimes cause a problem, as they tend to vibrate more, which can upset the sensors.  I have had the 3 lights on for about 4 years...!  The problem in my vehicle is in the right front sensor.

I have the "3 amigos" currently, but they came on due to me letting the front pads and discs wear waaaay beyond what they should have been.

Im curious though.... disconnecting the battery clears faults? I thought all faults needed to be cleared with a test book?

BTW just as a side note, i purchased my pads and rotors from http://www.roverparts.com.au ....seemed to me good prices??

I suspect Shuttle Valve Switches in ABS modulator or possibly the internal connection post that connects to shuttle valves. I have had "3 Amigos" twice with my 2000 TD5 and both occasions it was shuttle valves. If you look on AULRO Discovery 2   http://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery-2/94638-bloody-3-amigos-again.html    you will see how I fixed problem hopefully permanently. Note that if the problem is the internal connection to shuttle valve switch assy, then you can perform surgery on it & resolder, or bring this connection out thru switch assembly to an external connector. If you follow my instructions on how to test SVS assy you will know exactly where problem lies.

Here is another link with images I took when performing shuttle valve switch replacement & upgrading shuttle valve seals to prevent hydraulic oil from damaging new switches http://www.aulro.com/afvb/electronic-diagnostics/95891-replacing-shuttle-valve-switches-need-nanocom.html
I hope this helps owners to diagnose "3 Amigo" issue & repair it themselves.

ended up being shuttle valve and then replacing master cylinder as there was gunk in there that kept finding its way into the ABS. all good now though.
