Brake Controller Installation
« on: June 30, 2008, 06:43:00 PM »
Here it is, EBC installed in my 03MY D2.  Notice how it intrudes on the interior and interferes with the drivers knees.

OK, this is the full information:

Controller: RedArc EB1AX-RH.

The RH stands for remote head and means the controls are all able to be mounted externally to the unit.  This unit is a time delay type and does not need to be mounted in any specific direction or plane of travel relative to the vehicle.

So the unit (which is identical to the EB1AX RedArc) is silasticed to the inside of the kick panel below the steering wheel.

The LED that indicates braking is on the top left of the kick panel and along side this is the braking strength adjustment knob.

The red switch on the left binnacle cluster is the manual override button.  I used the momentary (non-latching) switch I had bought to get the correct switch cover when wiring up my spot lights.  Pins 1 & 3 provide current through the switch as per the manual override button when pressed and held.  The red paint was some of the wife's nail polish.

The 2 reasons for the LED indicator and sensitivity adjustment knob on the kick panel were thickness of the panel and the fact I'd already tried mounting a Tekonsha P3 there.

The Tekonsha P3 gave me no end of grief with strange voltages bleeds, so it will go in the Defender (if it works).  The RedArc may not be as fancy but I'm sure it will do the job just as well and unlike the Tekonsha it is much less intrusive.

All good info - thanks for that Derek. I've been thinking about how to set mine up without mounting a unit on top of the dash as I have seen some others do.

But first, I suppose I'd better get some brakes on my camper trailer. Actually thinking of buying a Jayco Expanda with electric brakes, so will have to d something pretty soon.

Might eventually get up your way for a trip if I buy the Jayco - I grew up not too far from where you are and haven't been back there for a few years.

Cheers ........... BM
