Disco 2 Rear Quarter Panel Cut
« on: June 18, 2008, 08:33:57 AM »
As most of you know D2s haven't got the best departure angle and as such damage to the rear quarters is commom as well as the rear bumper.

Well after damaging both i decided that cutting of my quarters was a nessesity as the damage looked terrible.
This will show you the damage i did, the standard bumper was half torn off before i did this hence the steel bar in it's place as you can see i bent the steel bar when i did this damage.

I don't have step by step photos only the finished look, so i'll explain it as best i can.

First step was to buy some checker plate, i got mine from Bunnings because it is available in 450mm square sections.

I then marked where i was going to cut, which for me was 4" i had to do some panel repair to take alot of the damage off so i could fit the checker plate to as much surface as possible.

I then cut the checker plate to fit between the top mould of the guard and where i did the cut, this is not flat, it's curved so you will need to panel beat the checker to suit the curve of the guard, i did this with a rubber mallet.

I used the existing black panel trim, i just shortened the curved one that is on the guard curve just above the mudflap and moved it up the guard a bit till it was inline, then trimmed the other bottom trim long ways (made it thinner) to sit along the bottom of the quarter, this i had to fit just behind the other trim as it was shorter after i cut the guard, but luckly it just fit.

I attached the checker with Sicoflex and clamped it in place, this will need to remain clamped for at least 8hrs to insure good contact (i left it overnight)

There ya go, i think it looks good and follows the existing lines of the car, so i'm pretty happy, i am however going to change the trim at the bottom, just to make it look a bit better.

I have been considering a quater panel cut to prevent damage similar to what you have suffered.

I was wondering if you have folded the bottom of the quater panel for strenght or is it just straight as cut ?

Also what did you use to treat the cut metal to prevent corrosion ?

Just a straight cut, i used the checker for extra strength and the plastic trim for looks.
