For the purpose of towing (As opposed to snatching a vehicle out) what is you view on the best tow rope?  Chain?  Steel Cable or a strap (Non snatch).

I would be interested in people views and merits of each as they see it.

I use a 5m 2 tonne rated tow strap. Chain and cable is to heavy and takes up more room and is a pain to handle and store.

Definitely a strap, easiest and safest to handle, packs smallest, weighs the least, and doesn't rust.

Snatch strap purely for the give that they offer. The winch ext straps though most definately do have stretch in them also, just less than a snatch strap. I say this as it removes the jolt or impact forces out of the towing operation when slack develops in the system and is therefore just gentler on the vehicles and towing fittings. I wouldn't use steel rope, chains etc if there were other options.
