Electric windows
« on: February 27, 2008, 06:23:05 PM »
Hi All,  Not sure if this topic has been covered as have not visited site for a little while :(.  Problem is drivers side window will go all the way down then sounds as if it has missed a tooth on the electric motor.  It then will not go back up.  Had to strip off door lining and door mech to a mesh gear with mech anism that lifts and lowers glass.  However the window now works fine if you dont let it go all the way to bottom of door......anyone had this??

Hi grasshopper.

Assume that you've checked the teeth / gearing on that section of the rail that is aligned / meshed with the drive cog when the window is fully down.

Haven't had the problem with either of my Disco's, but have experienced similar in Ford F100 a while back. Problem there was loose linkages on the main (driven) rail which pushes the window up & down. During most of the range of movement, the rail remained fully engaged with the drive cog, but when window was fully down, there was enough movement in the linkages holding this rail in position that the rail was able to move slightly away from the drive cog, allowing the gearing to slip. To fix, I drilled out the linkage holes to a slightly larger diameter than original (so that both holes were exactly the same size, and replaced the original linkage pin with a bolt of the same diameter as the holes. Then used washers and two nuts locked together so that linkage was loose enough to allow movement, but nuts would not come loose. All worked fine after this fix.

Don't know if this will be the same problem / fix in the Disco, but it's where I would start looking.

Thanks BMKal,  I inspected gear closely and wiped grease of teeth,  and all seems perfect, with no broken or excessive wear on motor or linkage.  I may have another crack at it over the weekend and keep an eye out on what you suggested....Thanks.

Hi There, I had the same problem and  found that it was the last tooth worn on the rgulator. I rebuild the tooth with a tiny piece of steel and mig welder. It worked a treat. The tooth actually looked fine but with some wear in the pivot shaft of the reg this tooth if slightly worn will jump. Hope this helps..Cheers

All,  Further to the electric window prob...I have removed motor from window regulator and prized off a small circular cap that reveals a rubber drive coupler that takes up the enertia when the window glass reaches its max up and down position.  The rubber drive mech has rotted out so shaft spins and hence continues to drive window even when right down or up, so motor doesnt know when to stop...hope this makes sense to anyone else that may have the problem down the track.  Remedy is a new electic motor as it is all one ass'y..of course.

Hi All, Well it continues,  this time passenger side front ??? Different problem this time...I have all the luck.  Something else to keep an eye on...small plastic rollers on the bottom of the slider that the window glass bolts onto crack and break in halves thus windows dont go up or down.  Remedy ..new regulator and away you go.  Looking to get a job as a gyno now,  as I am very good at fixing things through small holes.  Jeeze I hope this has happened to someone else.
