How to get bigger tyres and still be legal
« on: December 18, 2007, 06:26:13 AM »
Hello all,

I was hoping that the members of this forum might be able to assist me.  I am currently in Brisbane, but will be relocating to Syndey in Jan.  Once there I am planning on getting some bigger tyres for my 1999 TD5.  Currently I have the standard 235/70/R16's, but would like to go bigger to something like 265/75/R16's to get the bennefit of the extra 3.4 cm diff clearance.  I will also have/get a 2" lift and a bull bar to accommodate the tyres.  My question relates to the legality of changing tyre sizes.  According to Qld laws, you can only change diameter by 10 mm.  In NSW you are allowed to change diameter by 15 mm.  Essentially this law means you cannot change your tyre size, at least not significantly.  I undertand that to remain compliant with NSW law, one must obtain an engineering certificate to certify such large changes to tyre dimensions.  Is this correct and has anyone done this?  If so can you recommend anyone in the Northern Beaches area?

Advice or experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Oliver

Hi Baz,
I think you will find that NSW and QLD have still not implemented the new  DOTAR and so you are still limited to 15mm without engineering. (but things are changing all the time so I might be wrong) You can go up 50mm in Victoria, SA and WA.

It is VSB14 which is the relevent code and you can view it here : http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/safety/bulletin/pdf/NCOP11_Section_LS_Suspension_and_steering_3Feb2006.pdf

relevent part is on page 16.
