Defender Transfer Case with Maxi Drive Low Range
« on: March 21, 2006, 02:36:18 PM »
Hey guys

New post on a similar topic to the last one.

I have been considering for some time to replace my transfer case with a reconditioned Defender T/C.  The only reason is to adjust my gearing to adjust to the 32" MTs I run as my daily driver wheels.  I do alot of towing and on my 99 manual Td5, 1st gear is just far to tall.

To complete the job my dream is to replace the low ranger gearing on the defender T/C to Maxi Drive rock crawler gears.

I have a quote for the full setup at $3300 installed.

DO any of you have opinions or comments on both the setup and the price?

Regards

Kelvin

I think that sounds OK.  I assume that you get to keep your existing transfer case for that price?

You should be able to sell it off on eBay and get some $$$ for it.

An alternative to this would be to change the crown wheel and pinion gears for both your front and rear axles.  That would work out slightly cheaper.  A pair of 4.11 CW&P gears is on special at the moment for $990 and then it'll cost around $400-$600 to get them installed.

So you're out of pocket under $2K.  Of course, you won't have the low range gearing that Maxidrive is offering, but I guess only you can determine whether that's worth it or not.

I think that the CW&P solution is cheaper, and will be satisfactory, unless your transfer case is already cactus and you need to pull it out anyway to fix or fit CDL.  Or fix oil leaks....

G'day,
I, like you, needed to deal with a very tall 1st gear in my D2 - too tall in a manual for towing trailers, pulling boats out of the water etc in high-range and 32" rubber standard.

I was able to trade-in my TC for defender TC - fixed the issue for me, as I was doing OK with the low-range, but needed to fix high.  If was doing it again - I'd probably go the new CWP route - with the 4.11's, you get the ratios fixed for 32-33" rubber in high and low range.

IMHO  :-)

Yeah, they are both LT230 transfer cases, though they are slightly different evolutions of the same case, and also with different high range gearing. The discovery is 1.2:1 and the defender is 1.4:1. I'm not sure, but I think the Discovery also has quiet designation gear, although it isn't the LT230Q (LT230SE???)

IMHO you'd be better off going to 4.11 diffs.  They'll bring your gearing back to a tad below std which should be perfect for what you want to do.  You'll do that for about $1500.
