Replaced transfer case with Defender TC - woohooo...
« on: February 23, 2006, 06:29:19 PM »
Just an update - while shopping at Range-Rov - as per - got into some discussion about how to get my 10% power loss, from running 32" tyres, back...

I now am the proud owner of a Defender TC - this has made the car drive like it did when fitted with standard tyres - amazing difference - not the slug it has been!

I run 32" on the road, and 33" Simex for the tuff trips now, so I guess this wouldn't work for those who run 29" around town - but it has been a great change for me...

:-)

Simon,

What sort of cost is involved & are there any other advantages or disadvantages?

Regards

Hey good stuff Simon!!! What a mod. What inspired the nudge to change the transfer case?
Cheers

Simon,

Nice one. It was one of my options a while back before I took the 4.11 route. The advantage for me was that I retain the low gear ratio with the larger tyre as compared to the Defender t/c and 32" tyres.

Simon - The impetus to change the transfer case came from driving a standard V8 D2 with 29" tyres - how much extra get up and go it had...  I wanted that back!

Ian - my understanding with the defender xfer case is that I get lower ratios on high and low range?  With the bigger tyres - figured that would only be good...

I am certainly happy with the result (other than losing low on the weekend through a loose nut (no - not me)).

Chuck - partic useful on a manual - on an auto, probably less of an issue...  what do other's think of this?

cheers

The Defender has 1.4 high range compared to the Discos 1.2, and this brings the highway ratios back to standard. The low range is the same gear ratio though.

Thanks Simon - that's what I had also heard - ie. I had heard conflicting stories on this.  I was most keen on the getting the high ratios back...  but would have thought the Defender case would have gone for lower off-road ratios too, with the bigger tyres as standard...

Simon,

That sounds like exactly what I would like to do to mine.  I have a 99 Td5 manual with 32" BFG MTs.  I do a fair amount of towing and 1st gear is so tall with the standard Transfer case.  I believe that the Low range gearing on thw defender is the same as the Disco, so when I do replace my case, I will probably replace the low range with a Maxi drive setup.

Just as a matter of interest, what was the cost of the rplacement transfer case?

Regards
