Rear bar for a DII, IT'S FINISHED
« on: November 18, 2005, 11:24:37 AM »
Well i have started a rear bar for the DII and i must say it's coming along well, it's a variant of Slunnies (thanks Simon)  it doesn't have the same bend angle which brings it closer to the car.

So far it's like this.

Brackets made;

Tacked into place;

Sides tacted on these will be altered.

So far so good, the sides will have to be angled a bit more and brought in a bit and won't have such a gap.

I'm pleased with the result and must thank Phil (Discowhite) and Simon for their help.

Progress on the bar is going well corners are on just the left side to be brought in a touch, but it's being welded this week and ready to do the finishing touches next weekend.

Good work Baz,

I am doing exactly the same at the moment, using 100x100x3. I have been at Fraser Is. the last week so all I have is material. I am going to be carrying the bar along the side all the way to the wheel arch & cutting off the excess panel work. Bracing for the sides for strength I haven't finished planning but a bracket to the chassis will be the best bet.

More of the rear bar, on the car and with lights an honest opinion about the lights would be nice are they too much or do they look OK, they are off a 1972 Kingswood, keeping with tradition and only using Holden parts for the Landy :lol:  :lol:

OK more progress on the bar,  we have decided against the lights that these holes are made for and we are going to use the originals in the bar, so these holes will be filled and new holes cut out.

OK more of the bar, it now has a skirt the whole length of the bar with side skirt too, and also now has lights.

The lights are from a Pajero 92 to 97 and in my opinion look great and i think will look even better when painted, which will happen tomorrow.

That looks pretty good, are you doing any drawings, and will you be including pintles for wheel racks?

I had been looking at doing something similar but underneath the plastic and with spare wheel carrier pintles, but why re-invent the wheel.   Two spare wheels will go across the back and not obscure the high lights.

After years of "out backing" and "across the topping" with many rear door lock failures and being locked out too many times. I have finally come to the decision that there is nothing anyone, or me, can do about the bloody rear door and its mongrel lock.

Only real way ahead is to get the wheel off the door ( and at the same time get the sixth wheel off the roof. Diesel is getting too bloody expensive. More so when one has to pay well over $2 a litre.

What is needed is a rear bar with a wheel carrier, two wheel carriers. One for the RH side which articulates with door and always stays there, but carries the wheel weight/mass; and another for the LH side which is a removeable swing out for when a sixth is needed.

Even with their $2000+ bar ....................name escapes me; don't have pintles for wheel carriers.

Yesterday we finished the mods for my Disco, bar's painted, the lights are in and we fitted it and it looks really good, i am very impressed with how it turned out better than i expected.

We also fitted the Lovell springs and Rancho ES5000 shocks not what i wanted but for now will have to do.

Before we fitted the shocks and springs we tested the travel by fitted the shocks on their own and lowered the it to it's max travel and lifted it to it's closed travel then measured the gap from the bump stop, the gap from the standard bump stop was 50mm so 55mm will be how much i extend them by.

I would like to thank Phil (Discowhite) again for all his help in this as he did most of the work, without him some shortcuts might have been done too, Phil your a legend.

Finished and now to test out the shocks and springs :D

We went to Appin today to test out the suspension, bar and locker and all went brilliant and the bar was knocked about and came up good, lost some paint but she didn't bend at all, the mounting brackets on the car bent,  but not the bar :D

This is where i bent the bracket.

Great looking rear bar.

I do not have the skills to make one but I do have a friend that could.
Do you have plans that I could  use to get one made.

I used Slunnies plans we just changed a couple of things along the way, the only real differance between mine and Slunnies is the colour, the angle of the bends so as to bring the bar closer to the back of the car, the corners which is only a cut to fit a peice of 100x100 5mm plate and welded in place then smoothed, the inside corners is the same as the outside a piece of 100x100 5mm welded as a corner then top and bottom filled in, lights and the skirts for scraping over things.

I will put up some drawings soon but if you look at Slunnies and follow them you pretty much end up with a really good rear bar, we just changed things to what we liked, and they are only minor changes.
