« on: October 21, 2005, 01:35:06 PM »
I am after what weight & spec oils should I be using in the gear box, T/case, Diffs & Engine for the td5 D2 12/01 model??
I have been asking around at the diffrent places in town & the answer I keep  getting is "ring your Land Rover dealer". Well I ain't going there because they told me my 80000 km serrvice would be $900 because they have to replace the timing belt, yer bull crap, it don't have one.
So if you blokes could help that would be great.

Thanks in advance.

I can only give you specs on what they recommend for '03 model, but I doubt their would be any difference.

Engine Oil - Diesels:    10W/40 for climate range of -10 deg to 50 deg.
eng. oil dry- 8.20 litres
eng. oil refill & filter change- 7.20 litres

Oil man. gearbox- Texaco MTF 94
capacity- 2.70 litres

Oil Autos gearbox- ATF Dexron IID
capacity- 9.70 litres

Oil Transfer Gearbox- Multigear Texaco 75W/90R or oil to meet API GL5
capacity- 2.10 litres

Axles- same as T/Box
capacity front & rear are the same - 1.70 litres

I got this information from my manual so I hope it helps. :D

Bundaberg.
as for evereyone, I must have been living under a rock, cause I was nearly sucked in untiull I said something on the aulro forum & they set me straight. I have since brought the rave cd of that site as well which has the workshop manual for $15 or something like that & it has prooved invaluable.

Hey them specs are the same as in my manual but they are in euprope specs & they don't mean anything to australian oil companies, so what oils do you guys actually use ???

Hey Gidget,

Ring Austral Land Rover here in Brisbane (07) 3364 1455 this is the service department. Ask one of the blokes anything with regard to your vehicle as I have found them pretty good on most occasions in the past. (Unless you get this one A-hole!! I can't remember his name. I told him to P*SS OFF one time I was there. He thought he was above everyone else & was rude & arrogant.)

Hope this helps champ !!

Hey Giget

If you a still not sure about which oils to use, have a look at the Castrol oils website.

Good luck

Hi Gidget,

The correct engine oil for the TD5 is one that's not easily obtained.  You can't walk into Repco, Bursons or KMart to find Castrol Softec TXT 5W-30 sitting on the shelves.  That's coz it only comes in a 20 litre can.

I rang up Castrol Australia and ordered 2 of these cans (free delivery if you order two) and paid $340 for the lot, from memory.  They shipped it the very next day to my front door.

I didn't buy the oil because I have a TD5 but because my 2nd car is a BMW, and this is the only factory oil that is approved by BMW Australia for the current crop of petrol engines.

It's a synthetic oil that lasts a LONG time.  You can expect 20,000 kms out of this oil in your TD5 if you do a lot of highway driving, but if you drive it offroad a lot or in lots of stop start traffic, I'd recommend an oil change at 10,000 or 15,000 km intervals instead.

WRT diff oils, I just use EP90 gear oil.  I buy it from Penrite, because it's Australian and high quality.  There's a mineral version and a fully synthetic version.  Take your pick.
