V8 Engine or Drivetrain noise
« on: September 16, 2005, 04:24:58 PM »
Brooksy here,
Just wondering if anybody has come across, or knows someone who has experienced a rattle somewhat like shaking a half empty paint spray can with ballbearing.
You only hear the noise when under load - half peddle down onwards & can be quite loud when say, turning a corner then going up a steep hill, it's pretty bad sometimes (waiting for it's guts to fall out) ?
It is more prominate when engine is cold !!
I asked L/Rover in Gold Coast (Bruce Lynton) when I was getting my 20,000 km service to have a look but they said nothing much !
I don't know if it is the TIMING CHAIN or ROCKERS or something in the DRIVETRAIN ??
My Disco is a '03 SE V8 with 29,000km on the clock.

appreciate any suggestions,

brooksy

Hi Brooksy.

Do you have a manual?  Does it only occur at low revs under load?
Sounds to me like "pinging".  Do you use regular fuel, or high octane?
Kind Regards, Will Church

It is an Auto & it does it under acceleration to about 60-70km/h.
I have always put premium in every 2-3 tanks but lately every 5-6 tanks.

thanks Will,

Have you replaced your plugs recently?  What about leads?  Sounds like it's electrical to me, if it's an auto, as that should mean it won't labour at low revs.
I'm not a mechanic though...!

I'm pretty certain it is something mechanical not electric.
The engine isn't struggling it just has a rattle or clicking noise under load & then it slowly goes away once you have reached your desired speed.
I'm going to take it to Austral L/Rover in Brisbane & see if they can pinpoint it ??

Like Will said, I reckon it could be pinging. When I bought my Disco last year I asked the sales guy before I bought it if it had to run on Premium. He said definately not!

Now if I even run 1 tank of standard unleaded it Pings under load especially when accelarating up a hill so I have to put in premium on every tank.

I wonder if it depends on what fuel you are running before a service.
If you have been running regular & then they would tune to suit. The same goes if you are running premium & it was tuned to suit the higher octane, then you start running regular & the engine runs different.
Does this make sense or sounds a bit off ?????

Thanks for the input by the way guys.

Its a good idea to force the ecu to relearn the fuel grade by hard acceleration up a long hill that makes it labour.  On unleaded it will probably ping for a while but get quieter as the timing gets re-adjusted.  You may have to do several runs.  When changing to premium you have to do the same thing to get it to learn to burn the fuel properly.

Graeme Small.

Thanks Graeme for that mate.
I might give it a go if I have time. Unfortunately the 4by doesn't get to do many extended runs, only to & from my work each day , a grand total of about 4km which I don't think helps much ?

Just a quick final note with regard to my engine noises.
I must say, all those that said or thought it was the engine "Pinging" due to regular fuel.........SPOT ON !!
I put 2 staight tanks of Premium & the noise has almost completely gone !........Excellent. I suppose I will have to keep it at every 2nd tank from now on.

Thanks guys for your help & replies,

Hi Brooksy,

Sounds to me like its your catalytic converters.  You have two of them on either side of the Y pipe.

When the engine is cold, just crawl underneath the vehicle and thump gently on the exhaust Y pipe with your fist.

It'll either be a loose stone caught in the catalytic converter's heat shield (cheap fix) or it'll be your catalytic converter's innards which are broken and making that rattly noise (expensive fix).

Let us know how you go!

Thanks Lawrence for the response but since I have been using PULP every 2nd tank of fuel the motor has been purring like a kitten !!!

Brooksy,
I have found that my 2004 V8 dose not like normal unleaded at all I have had it in the car twice now and after the second time when the fuel tank was replaced and they filled it up with normal unleaded in ran real rough and pings its head off. I only run premium unleaded but mainly the expensive stuff like Optimax and B.P. Ultimum and it runs a treat and dose not miss a beat.

Hi Brooksy,

Glad you found out the root cause of your noises.

My '99MY DII V8 also doesn't like the 91 octane stuff.  Geeze, you'd reckon that these motors, designed in the 70s, wouldn't be so fussy about the octane of fuel that goes into them, the way they drink.

Oh well, I have settled on 95 octane fuel, coz I can't afford the 98 octane stuff....
