Bingo Diff on Unimog hill
« on: July 19, 2004, 06:35:29 PM »
I was playing on a hill in the Lake Lyall area (Lithgow NSW) that is used for driver training with the military Unimogs. I hadn't been able to pop the front of the Disco up a step the last time I tried it, but this time I couldn't get the rear up. A little bit of boot and things went badly. Check the video clip! (1.27mb).
Slunnie bows out!

Just lining up for my last run of the day!

Almost ready to go.

and Simba in the blast off position (just before the axle let go).

I broke the diff

and the axle.

Full pics and video at:
Broken rear D2 diff

Yeah it was a bit. The new diff's out again being checked. It got a bit noisy, lashy and some metal bits came out with the oil. Hopefully its ok and just needs the lash reset.

That's quality. Great pics and vid. Got to give you credit for giving that hill a go. I reckon I'm a few more months of "time served" before I'll point my rig up a slope like that!!
I've noticed your dog gets around as well, is he/she along on all your trips and have you nearly lost it a few time out the window??

Mick,
The fact that Slunnie got to where he did is quite an effort. I myself have tried to drive that monster, but when I realized that you just can't walk up it at idle, that was when I decided that it wasn't worth putting the right boot in just to risk the possibility of breaking something. Especially since there is a chicken run right next to it and some great challenges straight after it. That whole area around Lithgow is great for driving with really different terrain around every corner.
Cheers
George. :D

Its a great little hill. I'll have to try it again with the lockers in and stronger rear Maxi axles this time and see if I can get up.   That run in the video was at full road pressures and I'm pretty sure it can be driven still.

Simba.....

She just lurves the driving and company. She wears a harness these days so she doesn't get flung off the seat though. She has to be the most travelled non show dog to grace the planet - she even flys!  8O I have lost her out the window once I must admit, and she's never done it since. She decided it might be fun to jump out and catch the dog in the car in front.
