Fitting a heat exchanger for showers
« on: March 21, 2005, 04:54:53 AM »
I have fitted a Helton heat exchanger to my DII, it was a bit more fiddlely than my last vehicle but quite easy really.                            Just in front of the right side upper shock mount are 2 threaded holes i made a bracket to suit and put the Helton there it fits in there quite well, facing the hoses to the back of the firewall and interupting the heater hoses at the front where it joins the upper radiator hose and on the other side just before the intercooler (standard) i then ran the fresh water in and water out hoses to the bullbar.
I used air connectors as joiners as they are a better watertight seal, i'll put some pix up soon, i forgot to bring the camera today

This is for anyone who has thought of this and anyone else who might want it.

G'day Baz,

Do give us an update on how well this system works when you're taking a shower right in the middle of winter!   :P

I'd be interested in finding out whether the engine is able to generate sufficient hot water with the engine idling.  On some other vehicles, I believe that they need to have the engine revving pretty high (circa 1500 rpm) to get useful heating of the cold water.

Thanks,

Lawrance

Lawrance, I would have thought the way your V8 converts fuel to heat, you could run many showers at idle.....

At the moment i'm waiting on helton to send me a T piece for the top radiator hose as it doesn't work tapped into the heater hoses as with other 4bs, the coolent in the heater hoses doesn't flow unless the heater is on and the car is reving at over 1500rpm, so know good, putting a T piece were the flow never stops is the only way to get it to work i hope, as the DIIs cooling system is designed so that certain parts of it can have the flow of coolent stopped for added cooling of the engine.

I'll keep you informed,

Baz,
What would have been wrong with sending the full heater supply through your unit from where you interrupted the heater hose at the top radiator hose and then return to continue through the heater?  This line is documented as always having flow.

Hey Baz, how about supplying a photo to Helton themselves so that they can add it to their site?  Maybe with www.d2au.com included in your email to them...?
Kind Regards, Will Church

Well after trying so many differant ways of plumbing it into the Disco i've given up, it will not work in the TD5 Disco because of the way the cooling system works.
Does not keep the water hot enough for a shower.

So ends this saga, oh well guess i'll have to buy a Coleman or this little beauty.
