How far would you go?

Advice needed. Picked up a 1999 S2 TD5 Disco with 100,000 ks on it about 6 months ago with the intention of getting our there and giving it a go. Mad keen to get my rig very dirty and put it in some awkward situations. The car is sound and ready to be modified.

To date I have added OME springs,  shocks and steering dampner, kitted myself out with hand winch, snatch strap, block, and all the basic stuff to get me out of any pickle - none yet.

Would like to do the follwing and any advice on products/brands to go for are much appreciated. Also what sort of dollars to expect to pay for each and who best to do it on the Gold Coast - far from a mechanic myself!

1. Add winch bar
2. Fit centre diff lock
3. Add snorkel
4. Increase power & torque
5. fit 16" wheels with some good cross over rubber 50/50 on & off road
6. Fit dual battery system
7. Fit storage drawers with cargo barrier
8. Add driving lights
9. Roof cage
10. Fit recovery points

What from the above can I pick up second hand and where from. I All of this is going to have to wait until early next year so just doing my homework before I spend some serious cash!!

All help appreciated and even pics and descriptions of other rigs.

Hi Mick, welcome to the site.  I can give a little bit of info and some recommendations, but others will be able to help more.

1. TJM Steel bar
2. Rangie Spares cable actuated
3. Genuine LR snorkel, made by safari, with LR badge
8. Lightforce XGT
10. ARB heavy duty recovery points at the front, and Kaymar rear point in hitch, 4.75t rated shackles all round

What would I expect to pay for the LR snorkel and where would I get one? Also can I fit ARB recovery points myself (easy?) or does a mechanic need to get involved?

Hi Mick

If you are going to do some serious 4wding then i would make the center diff lock your firs priority.

1. Add winch bar
Winch bar depends on what you like the look of.
I like the ARB bar so thats what I have but I have to admit the TJM bar does give you better approach angle
$1100 fitted approx

2. Fit centre diff lock
No idea cause mine already had it but the cable actuated is cheapest and most people have this from Rangie Spares

3. Add snorkel
Snorkel from landrover - $350 can fit yourself fairly easily

4. Increase power & torque
I have a V8 but most people i know have the bruce Davis chip
$1200 - but dont quote me on that

5. fit 16" wheels with some good cross over rubber 50/50 on & off road
Should be able to get a 2nd hand set of 5 wheels for $600-800
IMHO MTR's are the best cross over. If you are going to get serious then you will want to install a 2" lift and put on 32" (235/85-16) tyres. $240 each

6. Fit dual battery system
Many choices. Shop around and not hard to install yourself if you buy complete wiring loom kit

7. Fit storage drawers with cargo barrier
Storage draws cost plenty from$1100-1900 for basic set of draws and almost impossible to get 2nd hand. I plan to make my own.
Cargo barrier - Milford $550-600 fitted

8. Add driving lights
Lightforce XGT but again expensive - $450 pair

9. Roof cage
No idea

10. Fit recovery points
Not sure if you can still get the ARB recovery points (they were only made in Perth) but a guy in melbourne is now making them.
$120 pair - easy to install yourself, they use the existing holes in the front of the chassis rails.

Appreciate your thoroughness. Looking forward to kitting my work horse out next year and putting it through it's paces. Once I get it up to scratch i'll post a few pics.

I'd start with front recovery points and CDL. This will help with climbing, especially on slopes. It stops the front tramping and sliding you sideways.

After that???

lift, tyres, bar, barrier if a tourer.
the same if its not.  :lol:

The only thing I would think about is the roof rack if you want to play hard. I'm wary of it pulling trucks over as they weigh a fair bit. I've spent some time at LandCruiser Mountain Park and I don't recall any track without at least 30 degrees sideangle.  :lol:

I've checked out your rig before actually and am impressed.
CDL is first on the agenda plus I think I am going to chip it - as soon as I can find out more info on Bruce Davis chips - any pointers? I cracked the whole front bumber assembly a couple of weeks ago as well so a new ARB winch bar plus IPF lights are booked in for early 2005 - winch to follow and hand winch will do for now until I get fed up with it! Also rims and tyres are going to happen early 2005. Trying to pick up some Disco 16" so I can then choose a tyre. I run 18" just now and the plan is to keep these for day to day and get a proper set of rims and rubber for play time!! Will keep you posted and any more suggestions I'm all ears. Very new to 4x4 but have badly caught the bug.
